Youth Services Librarian

Essential Duties:

 ·       Performs administrative and programming duties including the following:

·       Participates in development of operating policies and procedures.

·       Participates in the near-term and long range planning of library services.

·       Participates in library special projects as required or as necessary.

·       Selects books and materials for the Children's Room.

·       Weed the children’s room of old and outdated materials.  

·       Develops and conducts programs for children and caregivers which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills and the use of the library facilities and materials.

·       Plans and presents weekly story times for preschool children

·       Plans and coordinates the Library’s Summer Reading Program (minimum of 6 weeks).

·       Engages in outreach to schools, daycares and preschools, and other community organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers.

·       Provides reference service to children, teachers, and caregivers, and provides reader advisory service.

·       Develops, publicizes, and implements programs and services to children, caregivers and young adults.

·       Help develops children's library policy.

·       Help to develop fundraisers and find grant opportunities to purchase children’s materials and fund children’s programs.

·       Directs the daily operation of the Children's Room to ensure the highest quality service possible

·       Assists patrons in locating materials.

·       Performs public service duties as scheduled, assisting patrons with automated databases and other equipment as needed.

·       Prepares statistical and narrative reports for library annual report.

·       Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

·       Participates in professional library organizations and attends meetings and workshops to remain current in field.

·       Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements:

·       Constant talking, listening, and frequent sitting.

·       Requires physical ability and strength to bend, reach, lift, and carry (up to 25 lbs) over 60% of the time; and extensive use of computer terminal.

Education & Qualifications

·       Minimum – High School Diploma/GED, 2 year degree or higher preferred, Indiana library certification 6 (LC6) or higher (or ability to achieve within required timeframe). Strong customer service attitude, high energy, creativity, professionalism, excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written), ability to maintain good relations with staff and public, initiative, comfortable with ALL age groups, team player. In addition, the candidate(s) must have expertise and proficiency with computers and computer equipment, working knowledge of basic office applications and the Internet, including databases and social networking sites.

 

Compensation: $11 - $18 per hour depending on experience

Circulation Assistant II

Primary Function: Performs a variety of library circulation desk duties, answers the telephone, and assists in all areas of the library providing support when workload dictates. Follows many detailed computer and clerical procedures.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works at the circulation desk using the Integrated Library System (ILS) efficiently for transactions in checking in/out library materials to customers, processing borrower cards, maintaining borrower records, and determining the status of materials; resolves problems with fees, library cards, and lost and overdue materials as well as customer issues.
  • Answers phones and routes calls as necessary.
  • Accepts cash and check payments for customer fees and accurately records payments following established procedures; shares responsibility of counting money in cash drawer and balancing cash sheets at closing time.
  • Keeps daily tally of number of patrons, computer users, etc.
  • Assists and provides training to patrons in use of computer hardware and software, the library database, copy machines, and the Internet.
  • Assists patrons in locating materials through the OPAC or SHARE
  • Monitors use of the library and its equipment.
  • Organizes returned books and materials on cart for shelving in adult, teen, children’s, and audiovisual collections. Shelves all returned materials as well as changing the status of items, and reorganizing book stacks as needed. 
  • Pulls books on hold and prepares Evergreen/SHARE ILL (INFO express) returns, receives ILL and processes. Notifies patrons about reserved materials.
  • Performs basic reference work or refers it to a librarian in charge
  • Participates in creating library displays and exhibits
  • Places reservations for gym, kitchen, and meeting rooms and maintains a calendar with these events
  • Opens/closes the library facility as required.
  • Performs any duties as designated by the director or other librarians.

Schedule: Part-time 20-28 hours a week, including afternoon, evening, and Saturday hours. Willing to adjust to student schedule.
